Defining Conservation Priorities for Oak Forests in Central Mexico Based on Networks of Connectivity

نویسندگان

چکیده

Connectivity is a landscape property that promotes gene flow between organisms located in different patches of habitat and provides way to reduce loss by maintaining flux through the landscape; it an important factor for conservation decisions. In this study, we evaluated structural functional connectivity among 510 oak forest remnants basin central Mexico modeling potential distribution seven species inhabit it. The was estimated graph theory. Distribution models all had good level predictability, showing 53.16% suitable oaks. importance varied remnant forests. Large fragments highest values connectivity, small acted as steppingstones favoring movement fragments. southern region basin, connected forests conformed large network, but northern region, were mostly isolated. Conservation requires protection remaining preserving both ones restoring biological corridors isolation

Defining Conservation Priorities Using Fragmentation Forecasts

Methods are developed for forecasting the effects of population and economic growth on the distribution of interior forest habitat. An application to the southeastern United States shows that models provide significant explanatory power with regard to the observed distribution of interior forest. Estimates for economic and biophysical variables are significant and consistent with theory. Foreca...

Distribution patterns of Convolvulaceae in Iran: priorities for conservation

Assessing priorities is the most important action in conservation programs. Rudimentary, mapping of diversity, and distribution patterns have been used to set priorities on diverse scales. The distribution patterns of plant taxa, largely reflect an actual ecological niche. Convolvulaceae s.str exhibits cosmopolitan dispersal of diverse life forms and includes 50–60 genera comprising 1600–1700 s...

Impact of Canopy Openness on Spider Communities: Implications for Conservation Management of Formerly Coppiced Oak Forests.

Traditional woodland management created a mosaic of differently aged patches providing favorable conditions for a variety of arthropods. After abandonment of historical ownership patterns and traditional management and the deliberate transformation to high forest after World War II, large forest areas became darker and more homogeneous. This had significant negative consequences for biodiversit...

The influence of vegetation on bird distribution in dry forests and oak woodlands of western Mexico.

The bird species distribution along a dry forest-oak woodland vegetation gradient was studied in autumn and spring in two consecutive years. Intra-seasonal comparisons showed that bird species had similar distributions in each of the two years. Inter-seasonal changes were mainly due to compositional differences even though resident species generally used similar habitats in both seasons. Ordina...
